Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that the price of RON95 petrol in Malaysia will be reduced to RM1.99 per litre by the end of September. He said this move reflects the Madani Government’s commitment to allowing citizens to benefit from fuel prices that are lower than the unsubsidised market rate. Currently, RON95 is priced at RM2.05 per litre, while the market rate ranges between RM2.50 and RM2.60.
Public Concern Over Delay

Anwar acknowledged that some people are frustrated that September has already started without a price drop, but insisted that the reduction will still happen before the month ends. Speaking at the Johor-level Rapat Umum 27 Tahun Reformasi programme, he asked rhetorically whether dates like September 10 or 15 could be considered the end of the month, urging patience while assuring that the reduction will come.
Commitment to Promises
In tandem with his role as Finance Minister, Anwar emphasised that Malaysia is fulfilling its promise: “We promised, we deliver.”
Clarification on Overseas Visits
He also addressed criticism of his frequent overseas visits, clarifying that they are conducted on an official basis and not for leisure. As an example, he cited an invitation from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, to attend the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit on September 15 to discuss the serious situation in Palestine, especially in Gaza.
Easing the Burden on Citizens
With this announcement, the government aims to ease the cost burden on Malaysians by aligning fuel pricing more closely with subsidised levels, even as international rates remain significantly higher.
