BYD is rapidly expanding its highly popular sedan lineup with an all-new flagship model that could shake up the electric vehicle market globally and locally. Following an official preview by the Chinese automaker, the highly anticipated BYD Qin Max has been spotted undergoing public road testing with minimal disguise.
While it carries the Qin badge in its home country under the Dynasty series, Malaysian buyers can expect this tech-heavy fastback to arrive under the Ocean series naming convention, highly likely badged as the BYD Seal 6 Max.
The Super-Sized Sibling to the Seal 6
To understand where this new model fits, it helps to look at BYD’s recent local launches. The standard Seal 6 that recently entered the Malaysian market is known as the Qin L in China. This newly spotted Qin Max, or Seal 6 Max, is its larger, more premium upgrade.
Designed to target younger buyers looking for cutting-edge tech, the new sedan introduces more cabin space, upscale features, and advanced performance capabilities that the standard Seal 6 does not have.
In terms of design, spy shots reveal a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette that draws clear styling cues from both the Tesla Model 3 and BYD’s current Ocean lineup. It sports a clean, closed-off front nose, sharp LED headlights, and a continuous full-width light bar across the rear tailgate.
Inside, the cabin takes a minimalist yet tech-forward direction. The dashboard is dominated by BYD’s signature large rotating central infotainment touchscreen, paired with a compact digital instrument cluster for the driver. To keep up with demands for advanced vehicle tech, the sedan will come equipped with the brand’s latest God’s Eye intelligent driving and driver assistance suite.
Larger Footprint and Two Electrified Powertrains
Official regulatory data reveals that the new flagship sedan measures 4,866 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall, with a spacious 2,820 mm wheelbase. This generous footprint makes it notably longer than a standard Tesla Model 3, promising superior rear legroom for passengers.
Globally, BYD will offer buyers a choice between two distinct electrified powertrains:
- Battery Electric Variant: The pure electric model comes with two motor configurations, an entry-level 161 horsepower motor or a more powerful 322 horsepower variant. Powered by BYD’s signature Blade Batteries in 52.9 kWh and 64.4 kWh capacities, it delivers impressive driving ranges of 530 km and 630 km respectively based on the CLTC testing cycle.
- Plug-in Hybrid Variant: The hybrid setup pairs a highly efficient 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 235 horsepower electric motor, prioritizing exceptional fuel economy and maximum driving range for those not ready to go fully electric.
Five-Minute Ultra-Fast Flash Charging
The biggest engineering highlight of this new model is the integration of BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and revolutionary Flash Charging architecture. Built on a new high-voltage platform, this system completely slashes the time spent at public DC fast chargers.
According to official testing data, the vehicle can juice up from a ten percent state of charge to seventy percent in just five minutes. A nearly full charge from ten percent all the way to ninety-seven percent takes a mere nine minutes. Additionally, the updated battery thermal management ensures that even in extreme winter temperatures, the total charging time only slows down by three minutes—proving its highly robust thermal efficiency.
With BYD Malaysia successfully establishing the Ocean series as a household name through models like the Atto 3, Dolphin, and the standard Seal, the arrival of this ultra-fast charging Seal 6 Max will be highly anticipated by local EV enthusiasts looking for a spacious, tech-packed upgrade.
