Kuala Terengganu, Nov 23 — Heavy rain and high tides caused sudden floods on Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian. The rising water forced hundreds of residents to leave their homes and move to safe shelters.
Hundreds Leave Their Homes
Floodwaters swept into Kampung Pulau Redang early in the morning. The water rose fast and cut off the road to the jetty. More than 360 people from over 80 families are now staying at the relief centre at Masjid Kampung Pulau Redang.
By early Sunday, 264 residents continued to remain there as water levels eased.
On Pulau Perhentian, 44 people from 11 families moved to the temporary shelter at SK Pulau Perhentian. Parts of the village were under almost one metre of water.

Residents Describe the Sudden Flood
Many residents said the floodwater rose within minutes.
A villager from Perhentian, Mohd Deraman, said the water entered homes very quickly. Families rushed to save their documents and belongings. Some roads became unsafe as the water kept rising.
On Redang, residents found knee-deep water at their doorstep. Several said this flood came faster than usual, even during the monsoon season.
Relief Teams Provide Help
Rescue teams and welfare officers sent food and basic supplies to the shelters. Disaster officials continue to monitor the islands. They warned that more rain and strong tides may return in the coming days.
Flooding Across Several States
The situation on the islands is part of a wider flood event. More than 6,000 people in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis and Penang have left their homes due to the monsoon weather.
Water Levels Begin to Fall
Water on Pulau Redang started to recede in the evening. One of the shelters closed soon after. Even so, officials urged residents to remain alert. More rain may trigger fresh flooding if tides stay high.
