Cause of the Sinkhole
Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) confirmed that the sinkhole which appeared along Jalan Burma was the result of a collapsed sewer line caused by a dislocated joint. Initial assessments suggested it was a force main, but further inspection revealed it to be a 525mm diameter gravity line located just upstream of the affected area.
Road Closure for Safety
To protect public safety, Jalan Burma has been temporarily closed. The Penang Island City Council, with assistance from the police, implemented the closure around 9 am after the sinkhole was discovered.
Repair Works in Progress

Repair crews are already on site and works are expected to take about five days to complete. IWK assured that the repair will be carried out safely and promptly.
Traffic Diversion
Motorists have been advised to avoid Jalan Burma during the closure, with traffic diverted via Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong to ease congestion.
Public Advisory
IWK has appealed to the public for patience and understanding while the repair works continue, stressing the importance of safety and timely completion.
