Los Angeles, 2025 — Hyundai has unveiled the striking CRATER Concept at AutoMobility LA 2025, showcasing a rugged, off-road–focused electric SUV that signals a new chapter for the brand’s adventure-driven XRT sub-brand. Developed by the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California, the concept explores what Hyundai designers call a vision of “freedom” through industrial strength and playful creativity.

The CRATER marks a major step beyond the cosmetic “XRT” trims currently available on Hyundai SUVs. Instead, it previews a potential generation of purpose-built off-road EVs, combining capability, durability, and advanced digital systems.

Industrial Exterior With Real Off-Road Hardware
Built with Hyundai’s emerging “Art of Steel” design language, the CRATER features sharp, sculpted steel surfaces and a utilitarian silhouette. Its chassis is equipped with steep approach and departure angles, an extensive skid plate, rocker protection, and 33-inch off-road tires mounted on faceted 18-inch wheels inspired by asteroid impacts.
Functional elements include roof-mounted gear platforms, auxiliary lighting, limb risers for branch protection, recovery hooks — one doubling as a bottle opener — and detachable camera-based side mirrors that can convert into portable flashlights or cameras. The exterior is finished in a distinctive Dune Gold Matte paint with anodized orange accents.

A Rugged Cabin With High-Tech Controls
Inside, the CRATER embraces a stripped-down, expedition-ready atmosphere with an exposed roll cage, cylindrical sleeping-bag-inspired seats wrapped in leather and Alcantara, and four-point harness seatbelts. A single bent-metal dashboard, perforated with ambient lighting, spans the interior.
Replacing the traditional infotainment screen is a full-width head-up display that projects key driving information and customizable modules — fitting Hyundai’s “BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device) philosophy. Physical controls dominate the center console, including terrain mode selectors for Snow, Sand, Mud, Auto, and XRT, alongside buttons for locking differentials, downhill control, and trail-specific functions.
Playful touches appear throughout the cabin, including a hidden “Crater Man” mascot, a detachable Bluetooth speaker, fire extinguisher, and even a built-in “game mode” for the HUD system.
Electric Powertrain Still Under Wraps
Hyundai has not released full mechanical specifications, but industry expectations point toward a dual-motor all-wheel-drive electric platform, likely derived from the company’s E-GMP architecture used in vehicles such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 7. The inclusion of front and rear locking differentials suggests serious off-road intent.
A Glimpse Into Hyundai’s Off-Road EV Future
While the CRATER is unlikely to enter production in its exact concept form, Hyundai says the model hints strongly at the direction of future XRT-branded EVs and design philosophies. Its combination of rugged capability, advanced modular interfaces, and playful personality signals Hyundai’s desire to compete not only with lifestyle off-road SUVs, but potentially with emerging electric adventure vehicles.
With the debut of the CRATER Concept, Hyundai positions itself as a brand ready to redefine what off-road EV exploration could look like — bold, functional, and full of character.
