Strategic Shift in Porsche’s EV Plans
Porsche has recently made a major decision to abandon its large-scale high-performance battery cell production project under subsidiary Cellforce. Instead, the brand will reposition Cellforce as an independent research and development hub, focusing on advanced battery chemistry and system innovation rather than mass production.
Slowing Global EV Demand
This shift comes amid weaker-than-expected global demand for electric vehicles. While Europe shows strong adoption, with 57% of Porsche deliveries in the first half of the year being electrified models, the global figure is only 36%. Markets like China and the United States are not matching earlier growth expectations, which heavily influences Porsche’s direction.
Economic Challenges of Battery Production
CEO Oliver Blume and R&D chief Michael Steiner highlighted the economic challenges of producing in-house batteries. Limited production volume prevents achieving economies of scale, especially when competing against large Asian manufacturers who dominate the sector with cost efficiency.
Impact on Cellforce Employees
Around 200 of Cellforce’s nearly 300 employees will be affected by this restructuring. Porsche assured that staff would be offered transitions into Volkswagen’s battery division, PowerCo. At the same time, Cellforce’s retained expertise will continue contributing to group-wide projects such as V4Smart, acquired earlier this year.
Abandoning Factory Expansion Plans

The decision also halts Porsche’s expansion plans for a pilot plant and a proposed second facility in Germany. However, this does not mark the end of Porsche’s electrification journey. Instead, it reflects a smarter allocation of resources, with the company doubling down on areas where it can maintain technological leadership.
Reflection of a Wider European Struggle
Industry analysts see Porsche’s retreat as part of a broader European struggle to establish independent battery supply chains. Without massive scale or state-level support, many European automakers are finding it difficult to compete with established Asian giants in the battery sector.
Commitment to Innovation Remains

On August 25, 2025, Porsche confirmed its decision to discontinue Cellforce’s battery cell production ambitions. Yet, the brand remains committed to electrification and innovation, choosing a more focused, research-driven approach to ensure it stays competitive in the evolving EV market.
