Rolls-Royce to Power Saudi Arabia’s New High-Speed Trains

A Landmark Contract in Saudi Arabia
On August 21, 2025, Rolls-Royce announced a major agreement to supply fifty mtu Series 4000 engines for new high-speed trains set to operate on the Dammam–Riyadh corridor in Saudi Arabia. These powerful engines will power ten trainsets capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h.

mtu Series 4000 Engines Chosen for Reliability

The mtu Series 4000 engines are known worldwide for their high performance, reliability, and efficiency. Their selection for this project highlights the growing demand for advanced propulsion technologies in large-scale transportation projects across the Middle East.

Strengthening Saudi Arabia’s Rail Infrastructure
The trains equipped with mtu engines will serve the Dammam–Riyadh route, an important east-west axis that connects two of the Kingdom’s key urban centers. The project is expected to significantly improve passenger travel efficiency while supporting Saudi Arabia’s long-term rail infrastructure goals.

International Collaboration in Rail Development
The trainsets will be manufactured by Stadler Bussnang AG, with mtu engines integrated into the design. This demonstrates a strong collaboration between European engineering expertise and Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing its transportation sector.

Rolls-Royce’s Growing Role in Global Rail Projects
The order reinforces Rolls-Royce’s mtu division as a leader in rail propulsion solutions. Already established in aviation and maritime industries, the company continues to strengthen its footprint in rail, showcasing its ability to deliver dependable technology for demanding transport systems worldwide.
