Lexus Unveils the Sport Concept

On 18 August 2025, Lexus unveiled its striking new concept car, officially named the Lexus Sport Concept, a vehicle expected to be the highly anticipated LFR. This debut serves as the first official glimpse into what many believe will become Lexus’s next hero sports car, drawing inspiration from the Toyota GR GT3 concept first revealed in January 2022.

Minimal Details, Maximum Impact

Although Lexus released only a brief, three-sentence statement, it focused squarely on the car’s “progressive design.” The Sport Concept is expected to share a rear-wheel-drive platform with a future Toyota Supra while replacing both the RC and LC coupe models. Design cues and ambitions suggest it aims to recapture the spirit of the infamous V10-powered LFA.

Road and Track Development

Beyond the road-going version, the LFR will evolve into a GT3 racing variant, co-developed alongside the production car much like recent BMW M4, Chevrolet Corvette, and Ferrari 296 GTB models. Spy footage has surfaced, showing a camouflaged GT3 prototype believed to be powered by a V8 engine.

The Question of Power

Whether Lexus’s road-going model will also feature a V8 remains uncertain. The automaker confirmed back in 2019 that it was developing a twin-turbo V8 engine, though it has yet to put it into production. Given its position as the brand’s flagship performance car, the LFR would be a fitting candidate to debut that powertrain.

Design and Aerodynamics

Visual evidence from spy shots in Los Angeles in June shows the new design aligns closely with the concept’s styling. Notable features include a large front inlet hinting at internal combustion power under the elongated hood, along with fender and rear outlets that emphasize both aerodynamic efficiency and cooling. A rear wing extends from the decklid, further underlining its performance-focused aesthetics.

Official Styling Statement

Lexus’s lone official commentary on styling declared: “The progressively styled, future-focused yet truly authentic sportscar signals the way forward for Lexus design. This inspiring concept car features a wide, low-profile two-door form that blends dynamic and emotional elements into a vision for a next-generation sports car.”

Possible Reveal Timeline

Although no date has been set for the official production reveal, the timeline suggests it may be coming soon. A GT3 racing version is aimed for the 2026 season, and motor shows such as Tokyo in late October or Los Angeles in November present likely venues for Lexus to debut the production-ready model.

Part of Toyota’s Bigger Plan

This unveiling is just one piece of Toyota’s broader strategy to reinvigorate its GR performance sub-brand. Alongside the upcoming Lexus sports car and Toyota Supra, discussions around revivals of the MR2 and Celica signal a renewed commitment to iconic performance cars.
