PROTON’s e.MAS 7 Leads Sustainability Drive with AMTEL Deal

Proton New Energy Technology (PRO-NET), the new energy arm of national carmaker PROTON, has taken a significant step toward environmental sustainability by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with AMTEL Cellular Sdn Bhd. The partnership, announced in Subang Jaya on 9 July 2025, focuses on the transportation, disassembly, and responsible disposal of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Tapping into AMTEL’s Recycling Expertise

This collaboration will leverage AMTEL’s capabilities in extending the lifecycle of EV batteries, ensuring valuable battery materials are recovered and reused for second-life applications. These include repurposing the batteries into new energy storage systems or using recovered materials to manufacture new batteries. This initiative is part of a broader push for a sustainable and circular EV ecosystem in Malaysia.

Preparing for Malaysia’s EV Future

With projections from the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) estimating that 870,000 EV batteries will require recycling by 2050, establishing proper recycling and disposal frameworks has become essential. PRO-NET is taking proactive measures even in the absence of a government mandate to ensure the process of EV adoption remains environmentally sound.

Commitment to Environmental and Economic Viability

According to PRO-NET CEO Mr. Zhang Qiang, the company is committed to keeping the entire EV lifecycle sustainable. The battery recycling process will be in accordance with the Department of Environment’s (DOE) Electronic Scheduled Waste Information System (eSWIS). AMTEL is also investing heavily in research and development to explore new uses for EV battery cells, including their role as energy storage solutions.

A Mutual Vision for Responsible EV Ecosystem

AMTEL Cellular CEO Mr. Lim Hun Teik highlighted the importance of creating a comprehensive ecosystem around EVs. This includes not only innovation in mobility but also a strong focus on battery aftercare and safe end-of-life handling. He emphasized AMTEL’s alignment with PRO-NET’s mission to deliver responsible technological innovation and peace of mind for EV users.

e.MAS 7: Setting Safety Standards with Battery Technology

The Proton e.MAS 7, currently the best-selling EV in Malaysia, features a high-tech short-blade LFP battery integrated using Cell-to-Body (CTB) architecture. This design enhances vehicle rigidity and battery protection. A notable demonstration of its strength was when the AEGIS battery pack survived being run over by a 36-tonne tank—1.8 times the maximum pressure required by safety standards—without any fire or structural damage.

The battery has also undergone the “6 Devil” torture tests, simulating extreme conditions such as fire, flooding, freezing, crushing, scraping, and high-impact crashes. With zero recorded cases of spontaneous combustion among nearly a million units sold globally, the AEGIS battery system demonstrates unparalleled safety and durability.

Exclusive Trade-In Incentive for e.MAS 7

To encourage more Malaysians to embrace EVs, PRO-NET is offering an additional RM5,000 rebate when customers trade in any vehicle for a new Proton e.MAS 7. Both Prime and Premium variants are available from ready-stock inventory, priced from RM105,800 and RM119,800 respectively.

Leading the Charge in Malaysia’s EV Landscape

As a sub-brand of PROTON, Proton e.MAS continues to lead the national shift towards green mobility through innovation, safety, and sustainability. Backed by a growing network and strong aftersales support, e.MAS vehicles are designed to offer a seamless ownership experience in line with global standards.
