Subang Jaya, 15 May 2025 – In alignment with the Malaysian government’s efforts to improve road safety and champion sustainable transportation, PROTON has officially launched the PROTON Xchange Programme. This initiative aims to encourage owners of old and unroadworthy vehicles to trade them in for brand-new Proton models, including the highly popular Proton e.MAS 7 electric vehicle.
The launch event, held at PROTON’s Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya, was officiated by Yang Berhormat Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport. Present at the ceremony were Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of PROTON, and Dr. Li Chunrong, PROTON’s Chief Executive Officer. Representatives from PROTON’s programme partner, Car Medic Sdn Bhd, along with officials from the Ministry of Transport (MOT), Road Transport Department (JPJ), Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), and the Malaysian Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) also attended the event.
A Commitment to Greener, Safer Roads
The Xchange Programme is a joint initiative between PROTON and Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a Department of Environment (DOE)-certified and JPJ-appointed Authorized Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF). It is designed as a complete end-of-life vehicle solution, offering both incentives for consumers and environmentally responsible vehicle disposal.
To support this programme, PROTON has earmarked RM4.8 million to subsidise new vehicle purchases and ensure proper management of retired vehicles. As part of the initiative, buyers will receive RM2,000 in overtrade support applicable to any new Proton vehicle, including the best-selling EV model, the Proton e.MAS 7.
Eligibility and Benefits
The programme is open to owners of all vehicle brands. To qualify, vehicles must be 15 years or older and considered beyond economical repair. Eligible vehicles include sedans, MPVs, vans, 4x4s, lorries, and buses.
New Proton vehicles purchased under this initiative must be registered by 31 December 2025. Participants are required to present:
- A Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC) for the new vehicle,
- A JPJK1KD form verifying the deregistration of the old vehicle with JPJ,
- A Certificate of Destruction (COD) issued by Car Medic.
The new vehicle can also be registered under the name of a direct family member, offering flexibility to participating households.
Streamlined Deregistration with Car Medic
Car Medic simplifies the process by offering e-Dereg services—available door-to-door or at their facility. Their services include deregistration assistance, restriction checks, towing, and the issuance of CODs. MyKad holders in selected areas can complete the deregistration process entirely at their location, while group deregistrations (five vehicles or more) can be completed within two working days.
Government Endorsement and Industry Leadership
In recognition of the programme’s national impact, the Ministry of Transport has announced a first-year road tax exemption for vehicles purchased through the PROTON Xchange Programme.
Minister of Transport, YB Anthony Loke, praised PROTON’s leadership:
“The Ministry of Transport fully supports this initiative and encourages more automotive brands to follow PROTON’s example. This programme is not just about sales—it’s about responsibility. PROTON is once again showing its leadership in the industry.”
Echoing the sentiment, PROTON CEO Dr. Li Chunrong stated:
“The Xchange Programme is a major step toward a safer and more environmentally conscious automotive landscape in Malaysia. We hope this will accelerate the replacement of older vehicles with safer, more efficient models.”
Pioneering the Shift to Electrification
As the only Malaysian carmaker offering internal combustion (ICE), mild-hybrid, and fully electric vehicles, PROTON continues to pave the way for inclusive green mobility. With more EV models on the horizon, the company is committed to supporting Malaysia’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
