At the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), Geely displayed the Okavango—widely known in Malaysia as the Proton X90—alongside the Malaysian-made Geely Coolray. The displayed Okavango serves as an early preview, presented with locked doors and super dark tinted windows to obscure its cabin.
A Curious Mix of Old and New
Upon closer inspection, the display vehicle is a unique blend of different specification years, essentially matching a pre-MC X90 launch spec with a newer body:
- Updated Exterior: The vehicle wears the bolder, latest exterior design recently seen on the Geely Haoyue L facelift that surfaced late last year.
- Older Interior and Wheels: Despite the new face, the car does not feature the latest Okavango’s minimalist cabin. Instead, the dashboard and the alloy wheels remain identical to the current Proton X90.
- Return of ADAS: The white display example is equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This is significant because ADAS was removed from the updated Proton X90 MC launched in Malaysia in March 2026, an omission that triggered a downgrade to a one-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
The Malaysian Assembly Connection
Observers snooping around the GIIAS display unit spotted a Proton logo stamped on the windscreen.
Because Proton’s Tanjong Malim factory is currently the only plant manufacturing the right-hand-drive X90/Okavango, it is highly likely that this preview unit was made in Malaysia and exported as a Completely Built Up (CBU) model to Indonesia. This display gives Malaysian consumers a very strong hint at the styling direction for the upcoming Proton X90 facelift.
