Malaysia’s Future on Wheels: Proton e.MAS 5 Debuts

Proton has officially unveiled its second electric vehicle, the e.MAS 5, at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 in MAEPS Serdang today. This marks a significant step in Proton’s journey towards electrification, following the success of its first EV model, the e.MAS 7.

Compact EV Tailored for Urban Mobility

The e.MAS 5 is a B-segment hatchback, designed to cater to urban drivers seeking an affordable and practical electric vehicle. Based on the Geely Xingyuan platform, the e.MAS 5 is positioned as a more compact alternative to the larger e.MAS 7 SUV. Proton aims to attract younger consumers with this model, offering a balance between size, functionality, and modern features.

Performance and Specifications

While Proton has not released the full specifications, insights from the Geely Xingyuan suggest the e.MAS 5 will be available in two variants:

Both variants are expected to come with a 2,650mm wheelbase, a 375L rear boot expandable to 1,320L with seats folded, a 70L front trunk (frunk), and modern infotainment systems including a 10.25” digital instrument cluster and a 14.6” touchscreen with Flyme OS.

Market Positioning and Pricing

Proton has indicated that the e.MAS 5 will be priced below RM100,000, making it one of the most affordable EVs in the Malaysian market. This competitive pricing strategy aims to accelerate EV adoption among Malaysians, particularly first-time EV buyers.

Strategic Implications

The introduction of the e.MAS 5 signifies Proton’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup and making electric mobility accessible to a broader audience. By leveraging its partnership with Geely and focusing on affordability, Proton positions itself to compete effectively in the growing EV market in Malaysia.

Conclusion

The Proton e.MAS 5 represents a strategic move to democratize electric mobility in Malaysia. With its compact design, practical features, and competitive pricing, the e.MAS 5 is poised to appeal to urban drivers and young consumers seeking an entry point into the EV market. As Proton continues to innovate and expand its EV offerings, the e.MAS 5 could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation in Malaysia.
