Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series Launched in Malaysia – RM2.25 Million Est Starting Price

For decades, the Maybach badge has been synonymous with stretched limousines, cavernous rear legroom, and chauffeured supremacy. But what happens when the ultra-luxury division gets its hands on a low-slung, aggressive AMG roadster?

The answer has just touched down on Malaysian shores: the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series. This is not a sports car designed to carve up the corners of Ulu Yam. Instead, Mercedes-Benz has taken the athletic bones of the latest AMG SL, stripped away the aggression, and injected it with an almost absurd level of acoustic isolation, plush leather, and unapologetic branding. It is Maybach’s first-ever two-seater roadster, and it is here to pick a fight with the British luxury elite.

The Drive: Ironing Out the Tarmac

Under the hood, you won’t find the V12 from the Maybach S-Class. Instead, it utilizes Mercedes’ ubiquitous and brilliant 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. But do not mistake this for the fire-breathing monster found in the AMG SL 63.

Maybach’s engineers have fundamentally remapped the powertrain. The throttle mapping is incredibly lazy in the best way possible, deliberately avoiding any neck-snapping jolts. The 9-speed transmission shifts imperceptibly, and the exclusive “Maybach” driving mode even adjusts the engine mounts to be softer, isolating the cabin from engine vibrations.

Combined with softer steel springs, specially tuned adaptive dampers, and comprehensive acoustic foam insulation, the SL 680 glides over Malaysian potholes with a serene floatiness. It is fast—devastatingly so when you need to overtake on the PLUS highway—but it delivers its speed with a polite, muted purr rather than an obnoxious bark.

Quirks and Features

In true Maybach fashion, this car is loaded with eccentric details designed purely to flex its exclusivity.

  • The “Logomania” Hood: If you opt for it, the contrasting Obsidian Black hood is etched with hundreds of subtle, interlocking double-M Maybach logos using a special “PixelPaint” process. It is the definition of quiet luxury meeting loud branding.
  • The Standing Star: The standard AMG SL has the Mercedes badge flush on the hood. The Maybach SL reinstates the classic upright three-pointed star on the bonnet—a rarity on a modern sloping-nose roadster.
  • Rose Gold Headlights: Look closely inside the LED headlight housing, and you’ll spot elegant rose-gold accents, a signature Maybach Easter egg.
  • Rear Seats Deleted: The standard SL’s cramped 2+2 rear seats have been completely ripped out. In their place sits a beautifully sculpted, aerodynamic twin-cowl tonneau cover wrapped in Nappa leather. It serves no practical purpose other than looking incredibly elegant and improving wind flow over the cabin.
  • Floral Stitching: The interior is swathed in Crystal White Manufaktur Exclusive Nappa leather. Instead of standard diamond quilting, the seats and door cards feature a bespoke, intricate floral stitching pattern.

The Competitors

The ultra-luxury convertible segment is a very exclusive club. In Malaysia, the Maybach SL 680 faces two primary rivals:

  1. Bentley Continental GTC V8: The reigning champion of drop-top grand touring. The Bentley offers British “old money” charm, a heavier, more substantial road feel, and a slightly larger cabin with usable (albeit tight) rear seats. However, the Maybach edges it out in terms of modern infotainment (MBUX) and cutting-edge chassis tech like rear-wheel steering.
  2. Aston Martin DB12 Volante: For the buyer who wants grand touring but still craves sharp driving dynamics. The DB12 is noticeably sportier, louder, and more aggressive than the Maybach, but it cannot match the sheer pillow-soft ride quality and acoustic isolation of the Mercedes.

The Verdict

The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is a masterclass in repositioning. By taking a stiff, track-capable roadster and engineering all the harshness out of it, Mercedes has created the ultimate “valet darling” for Pavilion KL or a sunset cruiser for Batu Ferringhi.

It is unapologetically flashy—especially if you choose the two-tone “Red Ambience” or “White Ambience” paint schemes—and it makes zero apologies for abandoning its sports car roots in favor of pure, unadulterated comfort.

If you are seeking a visceral, canyon-carving sports car, look elsewhere. But if your goal is to be pampered by massaging seats, surrounded by acres of white leather, and sheltered from the noise of the outside world while driving with the roof down, the Maybach SL 680 currently stands in a class of one.
