2026 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport Updated in Japan: A Different Beast

Toyota has officially introduced the updated 2026 Yaris Cross GR Sport in Japan, with domestic sales now officially underway.

It is important to note that the Japanese-market Yaris Cross is built on the advanced TNGA-B platform, making it a completely different vehicle from the DNGA-based Yaris Cross sold in Malaysia and other ASEAN markets. This specific GR Sport update and its performance tweaks are exclusive to the Japanese TNGA-B model.

Enhanced Cabin Comfort and Tech

For the 2026 model year, Toyota focused on elevating the standard equipment list and improving everyday usability, particularly for those driving in colder conditions.

  • Infotainment Upgrade: A larger, high-definition 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen is now standard equipment across the GR Sport range (previously offered only on specific variants or as a paid add-on).
  • Winter Readiness: To improve comfort during winter, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel have been made standard.
  • Air Quality: The cabin is now equipped with Panasonic’s nanoe X air purification system as standard to maintain interior air quality.

Retaining the GR Sport Aggression

Visually, the crossover retains the aggressive, performance-oriented identity established when the GR Sport variant originally debuted. Toyota implemented minor exterior tweaks for 2026, most notably painting the side mirrors and the shark-fin antenna black for a sportier contrast.

  • Exterior Features: It wears exclusive upper and lower GR Sport grilles, bespoke fog lamp bezels, and a unique lower rear bumper cover.
  • Wheels and Brakes: The crossover rides on 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 215/50R18 tires. Hiding behind the wheels are red-painted brake calipers featuring the GR logo on the front set.
  • Interior Styling: The sporty theme continues inside with a GR-branded leather-wrapped steering wheel. The exclusive sport seats are upholstered in a mix of Air Nubuck and synthetic leather, complemented by a leather shift knob, gunmetal center console trim, and aluminum pedals.

Chassis and Powertrain Options

Beyond aesthetics, the GR Sport receives genuine mechanical upgrades over the standard Japanese Yaris Cross. It features enhanced chassis rigidity for better stability, a custom-tuned suspension setup, and a retuned electric power steering system.

Buyers in Japan can choose between two powertrains, both strictly front-wheel drive:

PowertrainEngine Setup & OutputTransmission & Enhancements
Petrol 2WD1.5L naturally-aspirated 3-cylinder

Pricing in Japan

In its home market, the updated 2026 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport remains competitively priced. The Petrol 2WD variant starts at 2,789,600 yen (approximately RM72,876), while the more advanced Hybrid 2WD variant asks for 3,169,100 yen (approximately RM82,768).
