Yamaha has officially launched the latest iteration of its popular underbone motorcycle in Vietnam, introducing the Yamaha Exciter 155 VVA 2026—a model highly anticipated by Malaysian riders as the next-generation Yamaha Y16ZR. The updated machine brings significant safety and tech upgrades, making it one of the most advanced offerings in its segment.
Upgraded Safety: Traction Control and Dual-Channel ABS
The biggest update to the 2026 model centers on its safety net. Yamaha has equipped the underbone with dual-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for both the front and rear wheels, providing optimal stopping power and preventing wheel lockups in emergency situations.
Furthermore, the flagship Special Edition variant now features a Traction Control System (TCS), a rare inclusion for underbone motorcycles of this displacement, which helps prevent rear-wheel slippage on wet or loose surfaces.
Proven Performance with Smart Re-tuning
Under the fairings, the moped retains its potent 155cc single-cylinder, SOHC, Liquid-Cooled engine enhanced with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFi) and Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). The powerplant generates 18.5 PS of maximum power and 14.5 Nm of torque.
To deliver a smoother and more controlled riding experience, the engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission equipped with an Assist & Slipper Clutch. This setup reduces clutch lever effort and prevents rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts.
Premium Tech and Features
The 2026 Exciter 155 VVA is packed with modern amenities designed to enhance daily usability and connectivity:
- Y-Connect Connectivity: Allows riders to link their smartphones to the digital instrument cluster to monitor notifications, fuel consumption, maintenance reminders, and parking locations.
- Smart Key System: Features keyless ignition and an answer-back function for added convenience and anti-theft security.
- Full LED Lighting: Equipped with redesigned LED headlights, position lights, and taillights for superior nighttime visibility.
- Audio Amplifier Integration: An upgraded electrical auxiliary feature unique to the higher-tier variants.
Variants, Pricing, and Availability
In Vietnam, the moped is available in four distinct trim levels: Standard, High Class, Limited Edition, and Special Edition. Depending on the chosen variant, estimated pricing ranges from RM 7,731 to RM 10,830 (converted directly from Vietnamese Dong).
As for the local market, Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has yet to release any official confirmation regarding when these updates, particularly the traction control and dual-channel ABS, will make their way to the Malaysian-spec Yamaha Y16ZR.
