Tesla’s Penang Launch Raises More Questions Than Confidence

Tesla’s New Experience Centre in Penang Faces Scrutiny Over Accessibility and Genuine Impact

Penang, 9 May 2025 – Tesla has officially launched its new Experience Centre at Gurney Plaza, Penang, marking the company’s latest step in expanding its presence in Malaysia. However, while the opening is being promoted as a milestone for green mobility, many are raising concerns over the exclusivity and limited accessibility of Tesla’s offerings.

Luxury Appeal Masks Real-World Gaps

Located at the Kelawai entrance of one of Penang’s most premium shopping destinations, the Tesla Experience Centre introduces the Model 3 and newly launched Model Y to the northern region. While Tesla touts the Model Y as the world’s best-selling EV with top-tier safety ratings, critics note that showcasing high-end vehicles in an upscale mall distances the brand from the average Malaysian consumer.

Incentives That Favor the Affluent

To attract buyers, Tesla is offering up to RM28,000 in incentives, including complimentary home charging support and low-interest financing. Despite these offers, the entry-level Model 3 and Model Y remain priced at RM181,000 and RM195,450 respectively—figures well beyond the reach of most Malaysians. The incentives, therefore, primarily benefit high-income groups, raising questions about the brand’s commitment to inclusive sustainability.

EV Infrastructure Still Lags

Tesla highlights its network of 14 Supercharging stations and 15 Destination Charging stations across the country, but EV advocates argue that the infrastructure is still urban-centric. Promises of six more Supercharging locations “coming soon” lack firm timelines, leaving significant parts of Malaysia, particularly rural and less developed areas, underserved.

Service Network: Urban-Centric and Limited

The company’s after-sales service centers remain concentrated in key cities such as Cyberjaya, Johor Bahru, and Perai (Penang mainland), offering limited support for EV owners outside these areas. The imbalance raises practical concerns over long-term maintenance, repair accessibility, and emergency service for Tesla owners in more remote regions.

More Hype Than Progress?

Tesla’s launch event included flashy promotional campaigns, priority test drives, and social media buzz—but industry observers caution that the excitement may be premature. Without addressing the underlying infrastructure gaps, pricing barriers, and regional disparities, Tesla’s expansion risks being seen as more performative than impactful.
