Mercedes-Benz Boss Said V8 On A New C63 May Not Happen

When Mercedes-AMG announced that its iconic C63 would ditch its legendary V8 for a plug-in hybrid four-cylinder, purists mourned. Rumors have constantly swirled about a potential V8 return to the compact super-sedan, fueled by the mixed reception of the new hybridized powertrain.

However, recent comments from Mercedes-Benz’s leadership offer a mixed bag of news for gearheads: the glorious Mercedes V8 engine isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but it almost certainly won’t be making a triumphant return to the current-generation C63.

A Decade of Eight-Cylinder Power Remains

In an era where automakers are rushing toward fully electric lineups, Mercedes-Benz is throwing a lifeline to internal combustion enthusiasts. According to Klaus Rehkugler, Mercedes-Benz’s head of product management, the company plans to keep building V8 engines for at least another ten years—potentially deep into the 2030s.

The decision is driven by undeniable global demand. While Europe’s stringent emissions regulations make large-displacement engines increasingly difficult to sell, other crucial markets remain hungry for them. Rehkugler pointed specifically to North America and the Middle East, where the V8 remains a powerful status symbol linked not just to performance, but to the visceral driving character and prestige that smaller engines simply cannot replicate.

Models like the S-Class, the G-Class, the SL, and the AMG GT will continue to wave the eight-cylinder flag. Furthermore, Mercedes has confirmed that the upcoming CLE Coupe and Cabriolet will offer a true V8-powered performance variant.

The C63’s Hybrid Reality

If the V8 is surviving, why isn’t it returning to the C63? The answer comes down to simple economics and vehicle lifecycles.

Reintegrating a massive V8 into the current C-Class chassis—which was engineered heavily around electrified four-cylinder powertrains—would require substantial re-engineering. Rehkugler noted that the financial amortization needed to justify that kind of massive engineering shift simply isn’t there, given the remaining time the current C-Class has left on the market.

While the four-cylinder hybrid AMG C63 S E Performance is an absolute technological marvel, producing a staggering 671 horsepower and out-accelerating its V8 predecessors, it undeniably lacks the acoustic drama and raw emotion that defined the C63 nameplate for 15 years.

A Quieter Future for the V8

Even for the models that do retain the V8, the experience will evolve. Rehkugler admitted that tightening global drive-by noise regulations mean the days of obnoxiously loud, popping, and crackling AMG exhausts are likely behind us.

Mercedes-AMG engineers will have to find new ways to ensure that their V8s still feel engaging and emotional without running afoul of strict new acoustic laws.

The Silver Lining: While the current C-Class generation is locked out of the V8 club, Rehkugler carefully avoided ruling out an eight-cylinder return for the next generation of the combustion-powered C-Class, which is expected to arrive around 2028.

For now, the message from Stuttgart is clear: the V8 is alive and well, but if you want one, you’ll have to look slightly higher up the Mercedes-AMG food chain.
