A Farewell to the ICE Golf R
Volkswagen is preparing to launch its most powerful Golf R ever, which will also mark the final internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the legendary hot hatch. This model is set to be a swan song before the Golf range transitions fully into electrification.
Engine Upgrade from Audi RS3
The upcoming Golf R will trade its current 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 324 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, for Audi’s celebrated 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo. This engine is capable of delivering 389 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, making the new Golf R significantly more powerful and performance-focused.
Compliance with Euro 7 Standards
Expected to debut in 2027, the model will also meet strict Euro 7 emissions regulations. To achieve this, Volkswagen will equip the car with an upgraded ECU, new particulate filter, advanced NOx sensors, and refined catalytic components to balance power with environmental standards.
Design and Testing at the Nürburgring
Prototypes have already been spotted at the Nürburgring, showcasing aggressive styling cues. Notable elements include a large roof spoiler, functional hood vents, quad exhaust pipes, and upgraded wheels and brakes—enhancements that underline its performance-oriented nature.
