From China to KL: Chery’s Hybrid Vision Comes to Life

Breakthrough Hybrid Launch in Malaysia

Chery Malaysia has unveiled its advanced Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) technology, alongside the preview of two new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) — the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV. The launch, held on 21 July 2025, signifies Chery’s continued commitment to delivering intelligent, efficient, and sustainable mobility to the Malaysian market. Michael Chew, Vice President of Chery Malaysia, stated that this move reflects Chery’s global mission to lead in energy-efficient innovation, offering Malaysians the best of electric drive, hybrid range, and Chery performance.

Introducing Chery Super Hybrid Technology

The new CSH system blends the strengths of Super Hybrid Electric Vehicle (Super HEV) and Electric Vehicle (EV) technology, promising exceptional efficiency and dynamic performance. Chery has been on its hybrid journey since 2001, culminating in the fifth generation of its hybrid system. The CSH platform features a 1.5L turbocharged dedicated hybrid engine with 44.5% thermal efficiency — one of the highest in the industry. It works in tandem with a high-efficiency electric motor to produce a combined output of 255 kW and 525 Nm of torque, ensuring a smooth and responsive driving experience.

Technology Features in Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEV

Both the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV models benefit from several cutting-edge features, including a stepless Super Hybrid Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) with 98.5% mechanical efficiency, and a high-capacity lithium iron phosphate battery certified to IP68 standards. The battery is dust- and water-resistant, withstanding temperatures up to 95°C and capable of fast charging from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Additional highlights include a Guardian Battery Safety Protection System and an impressive combined driving range of up to 1,200 km. These features work together to ensure high energy efficiency, performance, safety, and smart energy management.

Chery’s Expanded PHEV Portfolio

The launch of the Tiggo 7 and 8 PHEV models follows the earlier debut of the Tiggo Cross Hybrid CSH on 9 July. With the addition of these new plug-in hybrid SUVs, Chery now offers a complete range of vehicles in Malaysia — from petrol-powered to fully electric, hybrid electric, and now plug-in hybrid models. The Tiggo 7 and 8 PHEVs are designed to cater to a wide range of lifestyles, whether for city driving, eco-friendly commuting, or long-distance travel.

Extreme Safety Testing Across Continents

To reinforce its safety credentials, Chery’s Super Hybrid battery technology is undergoing rigorous testing as part of its Global Safety Challenge. In China, the Tiggo 9 PHEV was subjected to extreme rollover, collision, and drop tests. In Indonesia, the battery endured over 53 hours submerged in seawater, simulating flood conditions and proving its durability in tropical climates. The battery was later reinstalled in a Tiggo 8 PHEV and tested on the road. The safety trials will continue in Mexico, focusing on underbody scraping tests across rugged terrains to assess undercarriage protection. Further safety tests are planned for South Africa and Brazil, ensuring real-world reliability across various conditions.
