Volvo Car Malaysia Previews Flagship All-Electric EX90 Seven-Seat SUV

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 August 2026 — Volvo Car Malaysia has officially opened registrations of interest (ROI) for the Volvo EX90, the brand’s flagship three-row, seven-seat battery electric vehicle (BEV). Built on a software-defined computing architecture, the EX90 incorporates an upgraded 800-volt electrical platform, dual-motor powertrain configurations, and an integrated exterior and interior safety sensing suite.

Early allocation incentives will be offered to the first 100 confirmed customer orders, with final localized retail pricing and delivery timelines to be announced closer to its market launch.

Platform, Dimensions, and Exterior Design

The EX90 is built on the dedicated SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture 2) electric platform. It retains Volvo’s signature Scandinavian design language with flush aerodynamic door handles, closed-off front grille shielding, and pixelated “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights that feature an active mechanical opening animation.

  • Length: 5,037 mm
  • Width: 1,964 mm (2,113 mm including side mirrors)
  • Height: 1,744 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,985 mm
  • Seating Layout: 7 seats across three rows (2-3-2 configuration)
  • Luggage Capacity: 310 litres with all seats upright, expanding to 669 litres behind the second row, and up to 1,915 litres with all rear rows folded flat.
  • Front Trunk (Frunk): 34 to 37 litres of under-hood storage.

Powertrain, Performance, and Electrical Architecture

The EX90 transitions to an 800V high-voltage electrical system designed to reduce electrical harness mass, lower raw copper consumption, and support higher sustained current draw and DC charging rates.

Mechanical & Performance MetricSpecification

Central Computing and Digital Cabin

The EX90 operates on a centralized core computing architecture rather than decentralized electronic control units (ECUs). Powered by high-performance NVIDIA DRIVE computing platforms running Volvo’s in-house software, the vehicle continuously processes real-time telemetry and supports complete over-the-air (OTA) updates for powertrain, chassis, and infotainment firmware.

  • Infotainment Screen: A 14.5-inch portrait-mounted center touchscreen running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform.
  • Operating System: Google built-in integration, providing native Google Maps navigation, Google Assistant voice recognition, and app downloads via the Google Play Store.
  • Driver Display: A slim, freestanding digital instrument cluster mounted on the steering column displaying essential speed, battery range, and driver-assist states.
  • Connectivity: Integrated 5G wireless connectivity and digital key support via compatible smartphones.

“Safe Space Technology” Sensing Suite

The EX90 features an active safety system categorized under Volvo’s “Safe Space Technology” framework.

1. Exterior Sensing Suite

  • Roof-Mounted LiDAR: Integrated Luminar LiDAR unit operating with pulsed lasers to detect pedestrian and obstacle silhouettes up to 250 metres ahead in total darkness.
  • Sensor Redundancy: 5 radar sensors, 8 external cameras, and 16 ultrasonic sensors providing 360-degree perimeter monitoring.
  • Driver Assistance: Next-generation Pilot Assist system supporting adaptive cruise control, steering assistance, lane-centering, and automated lane-change maneuvers.

2. Interior Occupant Monitoring

  • Driver Understanding System: Two in-cabin cameras and a capacitive steering wheel analyze the driver’s eye gaze, blinking frequency, and steering inputs to identify signs of distraction, drowsiness, or medical emergency.
  • Occupant Sensing: Sub-millimetre interior radar sensors detect subtle breathing movements throughout the cabin to prevent children or pets from being inadvertently left behind in the vehicle.

Official Statements

  • Chris Wailes, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, stated that the EX90 marks the brand’s shift toward software-defined electric platforms and upgraded computational architectures as part of its ongoing fleet electrification strategy.
