A Living Laboratory for Innovation
Toyota has officially introduced its visionary “Woven City” in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, a groundbreaking high-tech village designed as a real-world testing ground for cutting-edge technology. Built on a former Toyota factory site, the futuristic community will explore advancements in autonomous vehicles, robotics, and smart homes.
Residents as Pioneers of the Future
The first wave of around 360 residents, mostly Toyota employees and collaborators, has already begun settling in. Over time, the population is expected to grow to approximately 2,000 people. Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda described the project as “a test course for the future, not just a town,” emphasizing its role in blending everyday living with bold technological experimentation.
Smart Homes and Robotic Assistance

Woven City’s residences are more than shelters—they function as active test sites for in-home robotics and assistance systems. Toyoda gave the example of robots capable of learning to fold shirts, a glimpse into how artificial intelligence and automation could become integral to daily household life.
Next-Generation Mobility
Among the innovations being trialed are Toyota’s e-Palette autonomous buses, self-driving logistics vehicles, and even flying taxis. These are designed to redefine urban mobility, creating safer, more efficient, and more sustainable transport options for residents.
Robots, Drones, and Everyday Tech

Beyond mobility, Woven City will also see experiments with companion robot pets, drone escorts to accompany residents home at night, and other AI-powered technologies designed to enhance comfort, security, and lifestyle.
A Vision Passed to the Next Generation
The project, first announced in 2020, is being driven by Daisuke Toyoda, son of Akio Toyoda. The initiative seeks to turn residents into “test drivers” of innovation, giving real-time feedback on how technology integrates with human life.
A Test Course for Tomorrow
Far from being just a showcase, Woven City represents Toyota’s bold bet on the future—a place where daring concepts in mobility, robotics, and smart living evolve from prototypes into practical realities.
