Lamborghini first turned heads in 2023 at Monterey Car Week with its Lanzador concept—a high-riding, four-seat coupe unveiled as an electric vehicle. The idea of the iconic Raging Bull brand offering both ICE supercars and bold EVs sounded unconventional then, and even now, two years later, that future feels uncertain. The automotive world has shifted, and demand for extravagant electric vehicles has cooled. Yet, despite those headwinds, Lamborghini has not yet finalized the Lanzador’s path forward.
Decision Still Pending
Rouven Mohr, the automaker’s Chief Technology Officer, recently told The Drive that a decision on the Lanzador’s drivetrain is still pending—but shouldn’t be far off. “I would not say this, but at the moment it’s clear that since we will launch the car [at the] end of the decade, we are not closing the door to any option because at the moment saying what we for sure will do would be a mistake,” Mohr explained when asked about the possibility of it arriving as a plug-in hybrid rather than a full EV. He emphasized Lamborghini’s careful consideration of shifting market preferences and cautioned that tailoring a single model for all global markets is not feasible.
A Potential Pivot to Hybrid
Until now, Lamborghini had remained vague about the Lanzador’s electric architecture, focusing more on the concept’s bold design rather than its mechanical details. If the company pivots toward a plug-in hybrid configuration, it would represent a significant change—though one that may actually excite the brand’s fanbase rather than alienate it. After all, a lifted, two-door coupe with four seats—envisioned as a PHEV—could resonate with markets such as the Middle East, where demand for powerful, versatile vehicles remains high. The success of the Sterrato, Lamborghini’s rugged variant of the Urus, underscores such appetite.
Challenges of Packaging
However, transitioning the Lanzador from full EV to plug-in hybrid wouldn’t be without challenges. Mohr acknowledged that although the vehicle’s overall aesthetic could remain largely intact, the technical packaging would inevitably change. “In the detail, yes, absolutely. But overall it would be possible to have a similar appearance, for sure,” he stated, summarizing Lamborghini’s goal of preserving the concept’s striking form while adapting its internal layout. He also noted the company was reassessing whether a different body style might better suit a fully electric or hybrid version.
Eyes on the End of the Year
As 2025 comes to a close, Lamborghini is inching ever closer to finalizing the Lanzador’s drivetrain blueprint. All eyes are now on when the company will reveal more—particularly its specifications, configuration, and ultimately, whether the Lanzador will stand firmly in the EV camp or ride in on hybrid power.
