Meet the Volvo ES90: Malaysia’s Next Flagship EV

Volvo Cars Malaysia has officially confirmed the arrival of its upcoming flagship electric sedan, the Volvo ES90, which is slated for launch in early 2026. This model represents a significant milestone as it will be Volvo Malaysia’s first fully electric sedan and the first passenger EV in the country to feature advanced 800‑volt charging architecture.

New Direction in Volvo’s EV Strategy

Chris Wailes, Managing Director for Volvo Malaysia and Thailand, revealed during a media roundtable that the ES90 is unlike a “normal sedan,” indicating a push toward redefining consumer expectations.

Volvo’s current lineup in Malaysia is focused on SUVs like the EX30, XC40, EC40, XC60, and EX90. With no plans for new S60 or S90 sedans, the ES90 introduces a new product direction for the brand.

Built on the SPA2 Platform

The ES90 is developed on Volvo’s new SPA2 platform, which also underpins the EX90 and Polestar 3. With sedan proportions blended with fastback practicality and SUV-like ground clearance, it stretches 5 metres long, is nearly 2 metres wide, and has a generous 3.1-metre wheelbase.

Performance and Range Options

Multiple powertrain configurations will be available. A single-motor variant with a 92 kWh battery provides around 245hp and 644 km of WLTP range. Twin-motor versions go up to 442hp and 670hp in the Performance model, which produces 870 Nm of torque and can sprint from 0–100 km/h in around 4 seconds. Top variants can reach up to 700 km range.

Ultra-Fast Charging Capabilities

Thanks to its 800‑volt architecture, the ES90 is capable of ultra-fast DC charging. A 10% to 80% charge takes only 20 minutes at a 350 kW station, and a quick 10-minute top-up adds about 300 km of driving range, making it one of the most efficient EVs in terms of recharge time.

Practical Design with Expansive Storage

The ES90 features a liftback-style rear with a 425-litre boot, expandable to approximately 1,256 litres with the rear seats folded down. A front trunk (frunk) adds an additional 22 litres of storage, enhancing its daily practicality.

Advanced Interior Tech and Luxury Features

Inside, the cabin is equipped with a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen running Google-integrated Volvo Car UX, alongside a 9-inch digital instrument cluster.

The audio experience is elevated with a Bowers & Wilkins system offering 25 speakers and Dolby Atmos. It also debuts Volvo’s dual Nvidia DRIVE AGX Orin computing system, enabling advanced driver-assistance through LiDAR, radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.

Safety Remains a Core Volvo Strength

True to Volvo’s legacy, the ES90 is engineered for safety with a reinforced structure, sophisticated restraint systems, and impact-absorbing crumple zones. Its sensor suite supports the brand’s Safe Space Technology, offering a next-level safety net for all occupants.

A New Chapter for Volvo Malaysia

With the ES90, Volvo Malaysia enters a new chapter in EV development, blending powerful performance, sophisticated design, cutting-edge technology, and class-leading safety. The company remains committed to releasing one new EV model annually and aims to begin local assembly of the EX90, further cementing its leadership in the region’s EV market.
