Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a special edition of its legendary G-Class off-roader, titled “Stronger Than the 1980s.” This limited-run variant pays homage to the original W460 G-Class—particularly the 280 GE—while seamlessly blending nostalgic design cues with cutting-edge modern engineering. The name might sound unconventional for a luxury automaker, but the aesthetic and features drive the message home.
Classic Exterior with Modern Execution
The front of the vehicle recalls its 1980s origins with a heritage-style Mercedes star mounted proudly on the hood. Surrounding it are details like protective headlight grilles, matte-black bumpers, and amber turn signal lenses—straight from the past.
Along the sides and rear, Mercedes leans into a more utilitarian look with full mud flaps, an optional ladder and roof rack, and a vintage-style spare tire cover featuring retro Mercedes branding. Buyers can choose from three solid paint colors—Agave Green, Cream, or Colorado Beige—paired with matte black fender flares and mirror caps for a bold, contrast-heavy look. Completing the package are period-correct five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels finished in silver.
Interior: Rugged Style Meets Luxury Tech
While the exterior reaches back in time, the interior lives firmly in the future. Drivers will enjoy twin 12.3-inch digital screens, a Burmester 3D sound system, a sunroof, and luxurious leather seats. However, classic details appear in cloth-trimmed consoles and seat inserts, subtle retro patterns, and tasteful inscriptions like “Stronger Than the 1980s” on the grab handle. Additional nods include a laser-etched silhouette of the Schöckl mountain—the legendary Austrian testing ground for the G-Class—and a “Schöckl-Proved” badge on the B-pillar.
Modern Powertrains with Off-Road DNA
Two mild-hybrid powertrains are available. The diesel-powered G 450 d features a 2.9-liter inline-6 turbocharged engine producing 367 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.
The petrol-powered G 500 uses a 3.0-liter inline-6 with 449 horsepower and 560 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. Both variants include a 9-speed automatic transmission, permanent all-wheel drive, and an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h, proving that nostalgia hasn’t sacrificed performance.
Limited Production Honors G-Class Legacy
To honor the W460 lineage, Mercedes is producing only 460 units of this edition. This approach emphasizes function over flash—opting for practical mud flaps and smaller wheels over oversized rims and sporty add-ons. This edition stays truer to the G-Class’s rugged roots, celebrating its purpose-built origins rather than chasing trend-driven design.
Availability and Pricing
The “Stronger Than the 1980s” G-Class starts at €160,055 in Europe. While Mercedes has not yet confirmed pricing for North America, it’s expected to exceed US$180,000 after import costs. Deliveries are projected to begin in late 2025, likely targeting collectors and off-road purists alike.
