Subaru Rex Hybrid Arrives: Ativa’s Eco-Friendly Twin

The Subaru Rex, a rebadged Daihatsu Rocky and stablemate of the Perodua Ativa, has gained a hybrid variant in its home market of Japan. This latest iteration brings a new electrified powertrain to the compact crossover, enhancing its appeal with improved efficiency and refined performance.

Two New Hybrid Grades: G Hybrid & Z Hybrid

Subaru is introducing the Rex in two trim levels: the G Hybrid and the higher-spec Z Hybrid. Pricing begins at ¥2,216,500 and goes up to ¥2,464,000 (around RM 66,000 to RM 73,600). These hybrid versions join Subaru’s growing line of electrified vehicles, marking another step toward greener urban mobility.

Powertrain Specs: Efficient and Proven

Under the hood, the hybrid Rex borrows its setup from the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize. A 1.2 litre WA-VEX three-cylinder petrol engine is paired with a 106 PS electric motor and mated to a CVT gearbox. This combination delivers around 122 PS of total system output, ensuring responsive acceleration while optimizing fuel economy.

What This Means for Buyers

The new hybrid trims offer notable advantages over the conventional Rex: reduced CO₂ emissions, enhanced fuel efficiency, and smoother driving dynamics thanks to hybrid torque. Subaru is targeting eco-conscious urban drivers seeking a compact crossover with lower running costs and a modern powertrain.

Retail Launch and Availability

Japanese customers can find the G Hybrid and Z Hybrid models now at Subaru dealerships nationwide. While production remains capped—around 150 units monthly in the standard Rex—specific allocation for hybrids isn’t detailed yet. It’s expected that demand will readily match supply, given the model’s compact size and eco-friendly credentials.

In summary, the Subaru Rex hybrid blends the convenience of a compact crossover with the efficiency of electrified power. With two trim options, smart performance, and competitive pricing, the G Hybrid and Z Hybrid could become compelling choices for urban Japanese shoppers.
