The Super Tourer Reborn: Life with the Aston Martin DB12

The Aston Martin DB12, heralded as the “world’s first Super Tourer,” represents a significant evolution in the brand’s lineage, blending high-performance engineering with luxurious comfort.

Performance and Handling

At the heart of the DB12 lies a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering an impressive 671 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. This powertrain enables the DB12 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 202 mph. The engine’s enhancements, including modified cam profiles and improved cooling systems, contribute to its remarkable performance.

The DB12’s handling is further refined with the introduction of an Electronic Rear Differential (E-Diff), a first for the DB series. This system, in conjunction with the Electronic Stability Control, allows for rapid adjustments to traction and stability, enhancing cornering capabilities. The vehicle also features adaptive dampers and a stiffer chassis, providing a balance between agility and comfort.

Interior and Infotainment

Inside, the DB12 showcases Aston Martin’s commitment to luxury and technology. The cabin is adorned with hand-stitched leather and features a new infotainment system developed in-house. This system includes a 10.25-inch high-resolution touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Physical controls for essential functions remain, ensuring intuitive operation.

The seating, upholstered in Bridge of Weir leather or Alcantara, offers both comfort and support, suitable for long journeys and spirited drives alike. An optional 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system provides an immersive listening experience, complementing the vehicle’s luxurious ambiance.

Design and Practicality

The DB12’s exterior design exudes confidence, with muscular lines and a widened stance that hint at its performance capabilities. Despite its sporty appearance, the vehicle maintains practicality with a 262-liter boot space, slightly less than its predecessor but sufficient for touring needs.

Real-World Feedback

Owners have praised the DB12’s driving dynamics and comfort. However, some have noted issues with the infotainment system, including occasional glitches and the absence of Android Auto functionality in certain models. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the durability of interior materials in warmer climates, particularly the potential for leather dashboard separation due to heat exposure.

Conclusion

The Aston Martin DB12 stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to crafting vehicles that offer both exhilarating performance and luxurious comfort. While there are areas for improvement, particularly in infotainment reliability, the DB12’s overall package solidifies its position as a leading grand tourer in the modern automotive landscape.
