Lotus Evija Gets High Praise from Legendary Car Designer

Frank Stephenson, the acclaimed designer of the McLaren P1, has voiced his admiration for the Lotus Evija, describing it as a bold and futuristic leap in electric hypercar design. In his critique, he acknowledges that the absence of a traditional combustion engine has driven Lotus to sculpt a vehicle that speaks through form, airflow, and presence.

Aerodynamics Replacing Engine Drama

Stephenson emphasizes that without the usual engine noise and drama, the Evija relies on its aerodynamics to create excitement. The car’s bodywork features dramatic Venturi tunnels and sculpted surfaces that not only enhance its appearance but also improve downforce and brake cooling, proving function and beauty can coexist.

Clever Passive Airflow Integration
He points out that the Evija’s seemingly simple front hides complex aerodynamic engineering. Air is channeled over the windscreen and around the wheels in a way that aids both cooling and drag reduction. The seamless transition of airflow from the front to the sculpted rear is a technical marvel.

Form Follows Function in Every Line

Stephenson highlights the rear of the Evija, where the car’s muscular haunches and massive air outlets create a signature look while serving a purpose. He praises the use of flowing lines and how every curve contributes to performance—culminating in a design that balances aggression and elegance.

Interpreting “Simplify, Then Add Lightness” in an EV
One of Stephenson’s biggest commendations goes to Lotus for remaining faithful to its founder Colin Chapman’s philosophy, even with the constraints of an electric platform. Despite the heavy battery, Lotus has managed to create something that still feels minimal, light, and agile in its visual execution.

Subtle Critique of Wheel Design
While largely praising the car, Stephenson notes one area where he feels Lotus could have taken more risk—the wheel design. Given the futuristic ambitions of the Evija, he expected a bolder statement from the wheels to match the rest of the hypercar’s styling.

Final Verdict: A Design Triumph
Ultimately, Frank Stephenson deems the Evija “HOT.” He believes Lotus has succeeded in creating a visually arresting, technically sophisticated hypercar that doesn’t just represent the future of electric performance but redefines it. The Evija, according to him, is an electric hypercar done right—where passion meets precision.
