Medicines by Air: Malaysia’s Drone Delivery Revolution

Coming Soon: Medicines Delivered by Drones in Malaysia

Malaysia is on the verge of a healthcare logistics revolution with the introduction of drone-based medicine deliveries. This initiative aims to improve delivery efficiency and ensure better access to healthcare services, especially in remote areas and during disasters.

Pilot Project by Avisena Healthcare and MHS Aviation

In June 2023, Avisena Healthcare, in collaboration with MHS Aviation Berhad and Kreatif Apps Sdn Bhd, launched a pilot project to deliver medicines via drone in Shah Alam. During the test, a drone delivered medication over a distance of 2.9 kilometers from Avisena Specialist Hospital to a patient’s residence in just 6 minutes — faster than the 11 minutes it would have taken by road. The project prioritized safety, privacy, and the protection of medical supplies during delivery.

Pharmaniaga and Project Eagle

Pharmaniaga Berhad also initiated Project Eagle, designed to deliver medicines to hard-to-reach areas like Pulau Pangkor. In its initial trial, a drone delivered 3 kilograms of medicines from the Manjung jetty to Pangkor Health Clinic in just 3.5 minutes, compared to the 30 minutes required by ferry. The project received support from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Civil Aviation Authority.

Disaster Response and Emergency Use

In December 2021, Pharmaniaga and Meraque Services Sdn Bhd deployed drones to deliver medicines to flood victims in Kuala Langat. Over three days, four drones delivered medical supplies to more than 30 homes, covering a distance of 8.6 kilometers. This operation demonstrated the effectiveness of drones in emergency situations and difficult-to-access areas.

Challenges and Future Prospects

While drone deliveries offer significant benefits, challenges remain, including high costs, the need for specialized infrastructure, and concerns over safety and privacy. However, with government support and technological advancements, drone-based medicine deliveries have the potential to become an essential part of Malaysia’s healthcare system.

These initiatives highlight Malaysia’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve healthcare access, particularly for those in remote areas or affected by disasters.
