Mercedes prodigy Kimi Antonelli moved to the brink of securing the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship following a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, executing a flawless one-stop strategy to finish 13 seconds clear of the field.
- Kimi Antonelli delivers an emphatic victory at the Circuit of The Americas, extending his championship lead to 123 points over teammate George Russell.
- Charles Leclerc secures second place for Ferrari on a two-stop strategy, executing a late overtake on Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
- The 20-year-old Antonelli requires only a ninth-place finish at the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix to secure the 2026 world title with four rounds to spare.
Starting from his first pole position since the Belgian Grand Prix in July, Antonelli defied expectations by opting for medium compound tyres at the race start, while the rest of the top five utilized softer, grippier rubber. Despite the theoretical grip disadvantage on the uphill run to Turn 1, the Italian executed a perfect getaway to convert his starting position into a lap-one lead that he would not relinquish.

Strategic Masterclass and Midfield Battles
The Austin race became a battle of tyre management and strategic divergence. While Antonelli executed a peerless one-stop strategy at the front, his closest rivals—Leclerc and Verstappen—committed to a two-stop approach. The tactical split resulted in a thrilling late-race pursuit, culminating with Leclerc passing Verstappen at Turn 12 with just seven laps remaining to secure the runner-up position. Lewis Hamilton, also charging late on fresh tyres, finished a narrow one second behind Verstappen to take fourth.
Further down the order, Mercedes’ George Russell endured a frustrating afternoon. After qualifying sixth, Russell was penalized five seconds for gaining an off-track advantage during an opening-lap skirmish with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Serving the penalty during his sole pit stop dropped him behind Piastri, where he remained trapped in turbulent air for the second half of the race, ultimately finishing eighth.
Championship Implications Ahead of Mexico
The victory at COTA marks Antonelli’s ninth win of his sophomore F1 season, moving him 123 points clear of Russell and 124 points ahead of Hamilton, with a maximum of 125 points left in the 2026 campaign.
The Mercedes driver will officially clinch the Drivers’ Championship in Mexico City next Sunday if he finishes ninth or higher. Alternatively, Antonelli will also secure the title automatically if neither Russell nor Hamilton take victory in Mexico.
