The U.S. President’s Armored Ride

The Cost of “The Beast”
The U.S. president’s limousine, widely known as “The Beast,” commands attention not only for its imposing appearance but also for its staggering price tag. Designed to resemble a Cadillac XT6, this armored vehicle costs approximately $1.5 million—fully funded by taxpayer dollars and integrated into the broader protective mandate of the federal government’s budget.

A Collaboration Between GM and the Secret Service
Crafted by General Motors in close collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service, “The Beast” entered service in 2018 and represents the third generation in a line of presidential state cars that stretches back to the administration of George W. Bush. The Secret Service, tasked with both executive protection and financial crime investigation, maintains and operates this vehicle under an annual budget of $3.1 billion allocated for fiscal year 2024.

An Armored Fortress on Wheels

The motorcade of the 46th President of the United State Joseph R. Biden passes by as U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and agents provide security in support of the 59th Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C.

Security lies at the heart of the limousine’s DNA. Though many details remain classified, media reports paint a revealing picture of its formidable defenses. With bullet-resistant doors estimated to be eight inches thick and laminated glass windows around five inches deep, the vehicle lives up to its reputation as an unparalleled fortress on wheels.

Advanced Defensive and Communication Capabilities

While the cost and funding structure are impressive on their own, additional insights from Business Insider reveal even more about The Beast’s capabilities. Built on a Chevrolet Kodiak truck chassis despite its Cadillac-like exterior, it weighs roughly 20,000 pounds and boasts advanced defenses such as night-vision systems, tear gas dispensers, and electrified door handles to prevent unauthorized entry. Its communications suite is sophisticated enough to transmit nuclear launch codes, transforming it from a transport vehicle into a mobile command post.

Luxury Meets Functionality

Inside, The Beast balances comfort with operational readiness. The interior features leather seating, water bottle holders, and a fold-out desk, providing the president with both luxury and a fully functional workspace while on the move.
