Lucid Sets Benchmark with Guinness EV Range Record

Lucid Motors has set a new benchmark in electric vehicle performance with its Air Grand Touring model, which now holds the Guinness World Record for the longest distance driven by an EV on a single charge. The car travelled an astounding 1,205 kilometres (749 miles) across Switzerland, Austria, and Germany without recharging. This journey started in St. Moritz and ended in Munich, showcasing the car’s real-world efficiency across varied terrains and traffic conditions.

Outperforming Official Range Figures

What makes this record even more impressive is that the Lucid Air exceeded its own WLTP-certified range of 960 kilometres and the EPA-rated 512 miles (824 kilometres). The record-breaking drive outperformed these figures by around 160 kilometres (and 237 miles beyond the EPA rating), highlighting how Lucid’s efficiency-focused design translates into real-world endurance.

Driving Strategy and Terrain Advantage

Behind the wheel was Umit Sabanci, a hypermiler expert who strategically planned the route to maximise regenerative braking and minimise energy loss. The descent from the Alps into lower altitudes contributed significantly to energy recuperation. Combined with a conservative driving style and low average speeds, the Air Grand Touring achieved this extraordinary feat while navigating through traffic and elevation changes.

Lucid Air’s High-Tech Engineering

The Air Grand Touring variant features dual electric motors delivering 819 horsepower, a large 112 kWh battery pack, and a sophisticated 900-volt electrical architecture. These engineering highlights not only provide incredible acceleration and power but also world-leading range. Its ultra-efficient aerodynamic design further enhances its long-distance capabilities.

Fast Charging Capabilities
Though this test focused on single-charge endurance, it’s worth noting the Lucid Air’s fast-charging strength. It can regain up to 248 miles (400 km) of range in just 16 minutes when connected to a 300 kW DC charger. This means Lucid’s technology excels both in extreme range and rapid recharging, offering practical flexibility to EV owners.

Impact on EV Range Anxiety

While ultra-long ranges may become less essential with the growth of fast-charging infrastructure, Lucid’s achievement delivers a strong psychological message: electric cars can now easily handle intercontinental drives. This kind of record helps address remaining concerns around range anxiety, particularly for first-time EV buyers.

Pricing and Future Models
The Lucid Air Grand Touring starts at approximately $112,650 (around €129,900). While this premium model targets the luxury market, Lucid plans to introduce more affordable vehicles, including the upcoming Gravity SUV, which is expected to retain much of the brand’s efficiency credentials at a more accessible price.

EV Benchmark Redefined
This new record marks a turning point for electric vehicles. Lucid has not just beaten previous benchmarks—it has redefined what’s possible in the EV world. With no recharges over 1,200 kilometres, the Air Grand Touring shows that electric cars are no longer bound by the limitations once associated with battery-powered mobility.
