Hyundai’s New Santa Fe Lands in Malaysia

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has officially previewed the all-new 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe MX in Malaysia, giving local SUV enthusiasts a first look at the boldest iteration of the family SUV yet. Marking the fifth generation of the model, this latest version is set to be launched officially on 2 July 2025, introducing a striking new design and advanced hybrid and petrol powertrain options that elevate the Santa Fe’s position in the mid-size SUV segment.

New Powertrain Options: Turbo Hybrid and High-Performance Petrol

For the Malaysian market, Hyundai will offer two distinct engine configurations that aim to satisfy both fuel-conscious and power-hungry consumers. The first is a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid setup, combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor to produce a total system output of 235 PS and 367 Nm of torque. This hybrid variant is matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, providing a balance of power and efficiency that suits daily urban driving and longer family journeys.

The second option is a more performance-oriented 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers an impressive 281 PS and 421 Nm of torque. This variant uses an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, aimed at those who want a more engaging and responsive driving experience. With these two contrasting yet complementary options, Hyundai offers a powertrain strategy that covers a wide spectrum of consumer preferences.

Bold and Boxy New Design Language

A major departure from the flowing curves of its predecessor, the 2025 Santa Fe MX adopts a completely new design philosophy. The new boxy silhouette introduces a more rugged and upright SUV stance, catering to the rising demand for tougher-looking family vehicles. Hyundai says this change isn’t just about aesthetics—it also enhances the practicality of the SUV by increasing interior space and improving rear visibility.

Up front, the signature “H-shaped” LED daytime running lights dominate the fascia, while strong character lines and squared-off wheel arches define the profile. The overall look is more adventurous and confident—clearly targeted at buyers who seek a more commanding presence on the road.

Advanced Interior with Cutting-Edge Technology

Inside, the Santa Fe MX undergoes a tech-heavy transformation. Hyundai has equipped the SUV with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching 12.3-inch infotainment screen, both integrated into a seamless curved display that stretches across the dashboard. This setup delivers a high-end, premium cabin feel and puts key controls and driving information directly in the driver’s line of sight.

One of the most notable interior upgrades is the relocation of the gear selector to a stalk behind the steering wheel. This frees up space on the center console, which is now redesigned to include dual wireless charging pads, USB-C ports, and a large open storage area that adds to the cabin’s utility.

Increased Cabin Space and Practicality

As part of its redesign, the Santa Fe MX focuses heavily on improving passenger comfort and cargo flexibility. Hyundai has made significant gains in second- and third-row legroom, while also enhancing the ease of access to the third-row seats—an important consideration for families.

The wider rear tailgate opening and flat load floor make it easier to load large items, positioning the Santa Fe as a practical choice for both daily errands and weekend adventures. Hyundai has clearly targeted growing families and active lifestyles with these thoughtful updates.

Market Strategy and Launch Timeline

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors plans to officially launch the new Santa Fe in Malaysia on 2 July 2025, with customer deliveries expected to begin shortly thereafter. This fifth-generation model will replace the outgoing TM-series Santa Fe, which has been on the market since 2018.

The brand is likely aiming to capitalize on the growing appetite for electrified SUVs in Malaysia, particularly in the premium non-luxury space. With hybrid demand on the rise and turbocharged petrol still popular among Malaysian drivers, the dual powertrain strategy gives Hyundai a competitive edge.

The Santa Fe MX will enter a crowded segment populated by rivals like the Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-8, and Peugeot 5008—but with its refreshed looks, modern cabin, and hybrid efficiency, Hyundai appears well-positioned to grab attention.
