Hydrogen Power, Alpine Style

A Bold Step into Sustainable Performance

At the 2024 Paris Motor Show, Alpine, Renault’s performance division, introduced the Alpenglow Hy6 concept—a hydrogen-powered supercar that challenges conventional automotive paradigms. This innovative vehicle merges high-performance engineering with sustainable technology, signaling Alpine’s commitment to a greener future without compromising on driving exhilaration.

Design and Aesthetics

The Alpenglow Hy6 boasts a striking design, featuring a sleek, ultra-low-profile coupe body constructed entirely from carbon fiber. Painted in Specula Blue, the car measures 5.20 meters in length, 2.10 meters in width, and stands just 1.14 meters tall. The design team, led by Alpine’s design director Antony Villain, has refined the vehicle’s aerodynamics, incorporating elements like a transparent rear wing, large front spoiler, and Inconel exhausts integrated into the water vapor-emitting rear lights.

Innovative Powertrain

At the heart of the Alpenglow Hy6 lies a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, specifically developed over two years to run on hydrogen. This engine produces 740 horsepower at 7,600 rpm and 770 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm, enabling the supercar to reach speeds exceeding 205 mph (330 km/h). The engine’s design includes an aluminum block with dry sumps, cast aluminum cylinder heads, and four overhead camshafts, all optimized for hydrogen combustion.

Hydrogen Storage and Safety

The vehicle stores hydrogen in three high-pressure composite tanks, each holding 2.1 kg of gaseous hydrogen at 700 bars. These tanks are strategically placed in ventilated and watertight compartments within the side pontoons and behind the passenger compartment, ensuring safety and optimal weight distribution. The hydrogen is injected directly into the combustion chambers, accompanied by an indirect water injection system that stabilizes the fuel mixture and reduces nitrogen oxide emissions.

Interior Craftsmanship

Inside, the Alpenglow Hy6 features a minimalist yet futuristic cabin. Accessed through butterfly doors, the interior showcases wraparound sports seats covered in fabric that changes color depending on the light. The dashboard combines carbon fiber, aluminum, and Alcantara, with design elements inspired by mountain peaks, reflecting Alpine’s heritage.

Future Prospects

While the Alpenglow Hy6 remains a concept, Alpine has expressed interest in bringing a hydrogen-powered supercar to production. The company acknowledges that advancements in hydrogen technology are necessary before such a vehicle becomes commercially viable. Nonetheless, the Alpenglow Hy6 represents a significant step toward sustainable high-performance vehicles, aligning with Alpine’s vision for a cleaner, yet thrilling, automotive future.

As Alpine prepares to enter the U.S. market in the coming years, the Alpenglow Hy6 serves as a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit and dedication to combining performance with sustainability.
